Starcraft 2 Wraith - First glance

There were some rumors last week of fansites heading to Irvine to spend a day at the Blizzard Headquarters. While we can\'t tell you what was going on just yet, we can tell you that this exclusive information, the other sites don\'t have. It\'s straight from Karune himself, so you know it\'s gold.

As a preface, I wanted to draw the community’s attention to the fact that we have not had very much information regarding Starcraft 2’s single player story other than the fact that we will start from the Terran point of view with the Wings of Liberty installment. We have the privilege of releasing this sneak-peak of an unseen single-player unit that many of the Starcraft fans remember: the Wraith.

You may be thinking WHAT?! But let me explain. The single-player mode of Starcraft 2 will not need to be the fine-tuned balance that we all will be expecting from this “ultimate Esport” that Blizzard is championing. As such, many people may have been wondering where all the other units have gone that aren’t making a come-back. Well, they still are around, and apparently they’re hiding in single player. Yup, that’s right! Single-player will feature many of your favorite units from the original game. This includes the Firebat, Goliath, Vulture, and Wraith (straight from Karune himself). I don’t know about you guys, but it would have been a shame to see the end of such catch phrases as “Need a light?” and “Fire it up!”

Since these units will be making their cameos in the single-player, this may cause one to ponder whether or not they will ever be added to multiplayer. It may be fair to assume that with subsequent expansions for the Protoss and Zerg there will be classic units that will return. We may or may not see them as playable units once all three expansions have hit the shelves. Since we are seeing so many new units, it only makes sense to phase in the old units once people get used to the new. I fear that Blizzard wants to keep multiplayer as linear and coherent as possible so it’s also possible that they will remain in the single-player campaign.

This information is also great news for map developers, as this means there are more models for them to work with when developing maps. Re-skinning and remodeling units is also available, but it’s always nice to have a wide array of models and skins to choose from. Diversity is always welcomed, and the more the merrier.
